The Biomedical Innovations and Engineering Design and Development students attended the KC STEM Alliance Capstone Showcase on Tuesday, April 25th.The Biomed students presented on several biomedical topics, including internships with HCA hospital in emergency medicine and sonography (vascular, breast, and abdominal ultrasound).  Students also focused on community health topics including mental health during pregnancy and heathy living for diabetics in the Hispanic community.  The Engineering students presented their projects, which included the prosthetic adjustor, a disc golf disc retriever, an accelerometer controlled auxiliary motorcycle light system, and a modular office desk system.  Robert Ricketts and William Duffelmeyer won an "Innovator Award" for their work on the prosthetic limb.  

MR. ELGIN'S AMAZING GIFT. Belton Science & Industry Academy Seniors William Dufflemeyer and Robert Ricketts knew they had to do something for  Zac Elgin, a Special Education Teacher at Belton High School. Mr. Elgin is an avid mountain biker with a prosthetic leg. But, in order to mountain bike, Mr. Elgin had to manually control the "Adventure" shock  component for his prosthetic. An engineering miracle was needed. William and Robert went to work! They developed, designed, and built a working prototype for a bluetooth connected device that allows Mr. Elgin to make necessary adjustments by simply pressing a button on his handlebars. Their device solved the dangerous and difficult problem of having to adjust manually to challenging terrain on the fly.William and Robert designed and 3D printed components and then built the electronics that make the device function.Their work won them a coveted Innovator Award at today's KC STEM Alliance Project Lead the Way Senior Showcase for Capstone Projects in the Engineering Pathway. Both students received $100 from Commerce Bank and some serious gratitude from Zac Elgin. . #Proud2BPirates
