Wilckens STEAM Academy at Hillcrest Named State School of Character

Wilckens STEAM Academy at Hillcrest earned the State School of Character designation.

STEAM earned the award for meeting Character.org’s rigorous standards, including its 11 Principles Framework for Schools. The national organization had a team of trained evaluators review STEAM’s school culture, climate and performance. Character.org determined STEAM deserved the designation for its school-wide effort in developing and implementing an intentional, proactive and comprehensive approach that embeds character into all aspects of school life. This includes its student-led announcements, school-wide pride procedures, Podcast Club, service-learning opportunities, buddies, Restorative Practices, before-school clubs and class meetings.

Principal Dr. Roxanne Pearson said, "This incredible recognition is a testament to the dedication of our entire school community at STEAM - teachers, staff, students, and families - who have all helped build a culture of kindness, respect, responsibility, and leadership. At STEAM we work to foster an environment where students thrive not only academically, but also as individuals who understand the importance of positive character traits. The caring and supportive environment at STEAM allows students to continue to grow and be the best version of themselves. I am truly thankful every day to get to be a part of this amazing school community. "

The Wilckens STEAM Academy at Hillcrest Character Education Team, including Melanie Ryberg, Miranda Russell, Madison Baker, Alexa Lopez, Beckie Payne, Heylee Warren, Greg Arney, Taylor Bintliff, Ashley Snyder, Megan Alexander, Erica McMillan, Phillp Jay, TJ Winkelmann and Roxanne Pearson, prepared the application.

STEAM is now eligible to apply for the National School of Character designation.
