Sarah Hinton Selected as Inaugural KFKids Fellow, Bringing Hands-On Food Justice Education to Belton
Sarah Hinton, a teacher at Belton High School, has been selected as one of five inaugural Fellows in the Kids Feeding Kids (KFKids) Fellowship Program. This national initiative supports high school educators who integrate food justice education into their classrooms, empowering students to develop culinary skills while addressing food insecurity in their communities.

With generous support from the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation and WellSky Foundation, the KFKids Fellows Program provides educators with funding, mentorship, and professional development to expand their efforts in food education, sustainability, and community service. Fellows also design and implement a capstone project to enhance food education in their schools and contribute to the broader mission of KFKids.

Empowering Students Through Hands-On Learning
Through KFKids, Sarah will lead students in hands-on culinary projects where they will learn meal preparation, batch cooking, and food safety while cooking and packaging meals for families in need. These projects integrate classroom lessons on nutrition, sustainability, and food justice, providing students with both technical skills and a deeper understanding of community service.

Under their guidance, students plan, cook, and distribute large-scale meals, with each project producing between 200 and 1,000 meals for families in need. These hands-on experiences provide students with technical culinary training while also fostering leadership, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of food justice.

“Kids Feeding Kids has shown me how to help my students recognize that their gifts and talents in the culinary field can serve a purpose greater than themselves,” said Hinton.

Transforming Food Education at Belton High School
As part of the fellowship, Sarah  will expand KFKids programming at Belton High School, further integrating service-based food education into their curriculum. This work aligns with Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) career pathways, ProStart learning standards, and Career and Technical Education (CTE) culinary and Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) curricula, ensuring that students receive valuable, real-world experience in food preparation and social impact.

“Educators like Sarah are transforming food education,” said Tamara Weber, Program Founder and Executive Director of KFKids. “By incorporating hands-on meal projects into their classrooms, they are equipping students with both the practical skills and the awareness to become active participants in their communities. We are thrilled to support Sarah  as they continue this important work.”
